Job Description:

The Industrial Automation Applications Engineer (IAAE) works directly with the Industrial Automation Sales Engineer (IASE) by using gathered information to finalize automation projects utilizing SMC products and other manufacturers. The Application Engineer will create drawings, Bill of Materials (BOM’s), documentation, and manuals in a timely manner for BDI customers.

Typical drawings created by the IAAE will include a General Arrangement, Electrical Drawing, and Hydraulic/Pneumatic Drawing
The IAAE works with manufacturers to find alternative products if project materials become too costly or delivery issues arise. The IAAE will become the Branch’s support contact after the project has been installed and will gather additional information by working with the Branch Sales Team and the IASE when necessary. The IAAE works with BDI branches to order product for projects and coordinate project timelines.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of the technical products we represent and services we offer. You must be able to relay this knowledge in a way that is understandable to non-technical customers.
  • Solve complex customer application issues
  • Provide support via phone and email
  • Effectively communicate product value proposition and product line strategies
  • Review and provide feedback on product literature developed by product line
  • Make recommendations for product enhancements and offerings
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of product support resources.
  • Attend training and sales meetings as required to stay current with all company products
  • Participate on teams to enhance team performance and drive process improvement
  • Enthusiastic about learning new things and taking on new challenges
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, and able to work autonomously with minimal direction

Experience and Education:

  • Must have experience in designing automation projects and demonstrate familiarity with SMC products
  • Proficient with using a CAD program and SAP
  • Engineering degree preferred
  • Prior experience working with and designing electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic control systems.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
