Product Manager, Protein Business Unit

Position Summary:

The Product Manager will join the Protein Business Unit that supports life sciences with industry-leading reagents across a range of research areas including coronavirus, stem cells, cancer, neuroscience, cell therapies, and more. The position offers an excellent opportunity to combine interests in life sciences with roles in business.


(S)he will contribute new ideas based on experience as well as contact with customers and prospects in the market to help drive business decisions. This person will help guide messaging for marketing communications and contribute directly to the development of content. They will work closely with the Sales Team to ensure optimized training and sales enablement. This individual must enjoy spending time in the market to understand problems and develop solutions and marketing efforts within the Protein Business Unit that support the company’s overall strategy and goals.

The Product Manager must demonstrate exemplary communication with all areas of the company and marketplace, including Executive Management, Business Development, Marketing Communications, Sales, Technical Service, Product Development, Operations, Finance, Regulatory and QA/QC, as well as customers, purchasing agents, etc. They will serve as a point person for the protein product line and be an expert on their use and positioning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Be an expert regarding all aspects of the protein product line from the conception of new products to discontinuations. Provide input at all stages of the product life cycle.
  • Discuss the product line in detail with customers and provide relevant feedback to drive the product pipeline and assist with business decisions.
  • Monitor and analyze performance of the product line.
  • Drive the overall marketing strategies to align with corporate objectives and measure success.
  • Plan, execute and measure effectiveness of new product launches.
  • Understand how proteins are used in customer workflows and ensure related marketing collateral is optimized.
  • Train and mentor team members on defined procedures and practices.
  • Develop sales tools and communicate sales strategy and value propositions to sales channels (internal and external), including appropriate technical and positioning training.
  • Recognize lucrative new areas, evaluate roadmaps for product development, and effectively communicate with customers about scientific concepts.
  • Understand the needs of both research customers and customers with clinical applications.

Education and Experience:

  • BS in a Biological Science required, advanced degree preferred
  • Financial acumen desired, MBA preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in the biotech or life sciences industry or academia
  • Relevant laboratory or technical experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Domain knowledge about the product(s) and their uses, competitor(s) and their product(s), and the marketplace, as well as the ability to seek up-to-date knowledge
  • Aptitude in product/customer/sales/ financial analysis which will lead to defining successful strategies and launching outstanding products.
  • Ability to work independently and make strategic decisions to drive the business forward
  • Identifies and invites stakeholders to join project/process. Seeks to surface the best ideas and arrive at a path forward through dialog, exploratory questions, and collaboration with others
  • Prioritize activities/requests for the best business outcome
  • Clear oral and written presentation skills, enabling professional communication across all layers of the organization
